How to Enjoy Great Fishing in Humboldt County CA

Fishing is a great time to slow down and push the stresses of life to the side. With hundreds of miles of rugged coastline, multiple rivers and their tributaries, and smooth freshwater lagoons, we have some of the best fishing areas around. We’d like to share how to enjoy great fishing in Humboldt County, CA.

“If people concentrated on the really important things in life,
there’d be a shortage of fishing poles.”
                         – Doug Larson.

Humboldt Bay

Fishing in Humboldt Bay provides calm waters year round. Generally, the best times to go are two hours before and after high tide. Among the large varieties, you’ll encounter sharks, bay rays, California halibut, various kinds of salmon, flounder, and English sole. You can also find crab, oysters, and clams. The method of fishing you use will depend on what you want to catch. At Humboldt Bay, you can go fly fishing, throw out crab nets, and boat fish to lure a halibut.

Pacific Ocean

There are a number of locations to fish along Northern California’s rocky shore. Shelter Cove is a favorite spot, and salmon, halibut, cod, albacore, and surf perch are some favorite catches. For the best experience, you’ll want to have an expert fishing guide. They know the best spots and gear required to help you succeed in catching your prized fish. Keep in mind when scheduling a charter, your day will probably be long (possibly up to 14 hours on the water).

Rivers and Freshwater

The Van Duzen, Mattole,  Eel, Mad, Klamath, and Trinity Rivers provide miles and miles of fishing for salmon, steelhead, cutthroat trout, shad, and sturgeon. Not only will you be able to fish on these rivers and the numerous branches that fan out throughout the county, you’ll also enjoy fishing in Big, Freshwater, and Stone Lagoons. They offer cutthroat trout, steelhead, starry flounder, rainbow trout, black bass, and red-tail perch.

Additional Tips and Benefits

Before you schedule a charter or simply head out with your rod and lures, it’s important to check weather conditions, site conditions, and California fishing regulations. You’ll need a CA fishing license as well. Although the season generally runs from May through November, there are spots where you can enjoy fishing all year round. Lastly, knowing what you want to catch will determine where to go, as well as what gear and which charter you’ll need.

There are so many benefits of fishing. For one, it’s great for your health. Being in the great outdoors and being active are always a boost to your physical and mental well-being. Breathe in the fresh air, sit back, and unplug—relax! When you do, stress will roll off your shoulders. Secondly, when you fish, you’re contributing to conservation. Your licensing fees help preserve our beautiful waters and surrounding landscape. Fishing is also a great way to connect with your friends and family and make memories that last a lifetime, including retelling fish stories that seem to grow and grow. As you’re reeling in the “Big One,” it becomes exciting and rewarding. Finally, depending on your catch, it also makes a great dinner!
