It’s All About the Trees
Lest we forget, Humboldt County is “Redwood Central” – we are all about the big trees here. And with good reason – there are amazing redwoods and state parks surrounding Fortuna, including some deemed a must-see. We even have “drive-through” trees; you can literally drive right through these trees!
Beaches
Miles and miles of breathtaking coastline, hiking and walking trails, crashing waves and windswept dunes… we think our beaches are pretty awesome. And they’re not just for sunbathing; you can hone your beachcombing skills, watch hang gliders and surfers, have a picnic on the beach, or cast your rod and see if you can reel in a fish. Some of our favorite beaches are Black Sands Beach (90 minutes away), Agate Beach (46 miles from The Redwood Hotel), Trinidad State Beach (42 miles), and South Spit Beach, just 20 minutes away.
Humboldt Bay
Our bay and the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge are worthy of their own weekend-long tour simply because of the variety of attractions: it’s a hot spot for migratory birds, especially during spring and fall. Not content to let birds steal the show, a wide range of other species make their presence known, including black-tailed deer, the white-footed deer mouse, harbor seals, river otters and sea lions among others. Beneath the bay water you’ll find 95 species of fish, Dungeness crabs, and perhaps the occasional leopard shark.
Hiking & Walking
Just steps from our hotel is Fortuna’s Riverwalk, a 2-mile path along the banks of the Eel River, where bikers and hikers can get up close and personal with one of the North Coast’s wild rivers. In our neighboring town of Eureka, you’ll find the Eureka Waterfront Trail, a 6.5 mile stretch along Humboldt Bay, giving walkers and bikers safe and easy access to Eureka’s waterfront and Eureka’s popular Old Town. For a little more rugged experience, try The Lost Coast Trail, a “beach wilderness” unto itself, a remote area of pristine black sand beaches untouched by development or major roads.
