The Redwood Riverwalk Hotel’s partnership with Pacific Outfitters of Eureka offers our guests Guided Kayak Tours of Humboldt Bay as well as Guided Hiking Adventures in the redwoods, including Avenue of the Giants. EcoPaddle: Kayak Mad River Slough is an expertly guided three hour kayaking or stand up paddle boarding (SUP) tour exploring the Mad River Slough Wildlife Area, a refuge for many migratory birds, shorebirds, ducks, and geese. This two to four mile paddle offers great opportunities for viewing wildlife and especially birding.
Birds including egrets, herons, Osprey, kites, and hawks reside and nest locally. During summer months, kayakers may see terns, cormorants, and pelicans. June begins the peak wildflower season as well as chances of spotting nesting songbirds like swallows, sparrows, and warblers. Wildflowers continue to be abundant in July, and fledgling herons and egrets may be seen. During the month, some shorebirds begin to migrate south, followed in August by many varieties of swallows. The website for the nearby Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge has additional information including When and Where to Find Wildlife and a downloadable brochure listing Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge Watchable Wildlife.
The EcoPaddle: Kayak Mad River Slough Adventures begin at Pacific Outfitters of Eureka, about a 25 minute drive from The Redwood in Fortuna.
- Pacific Outfitters provides the kayaks and SUPs, paddles, Farmer John/Jane wetsuits with splash jackets, booties, PFD/life jackets, and basic kayak instruction.
- They request kayakers wear non-cotton clothing, and bring a change of clothes to wear on the way home, towel, sunscreen, water, snacks, and lunch. Bird-watchers, don’t forget a waterproof camera!
