Humboldt Steelhead Days Winter 2019: Fishing in CA Redwoods

Ariel view of curving blue river with sandy shorelines surrounded by redwood trees on either sideFish on California’s North Coast this winter during Humboldt Steelhead Days, January 19 – February 23, 2019. Humboldt County celebrates the steelhead season with its Biggest Steelhead Hatchery Fish Contest, a Steelhead Fishing Photo Contest, and special events. The Redwood Riverwalk Hotel in Fortuna, a GreenLeader Hotel, makes a perfect base camp for fishing on the North Coast. Our guests are just steps away from Fortuna’s Riverwalk along the banks of the Eel River.

The Redwood offers a special “Steelhead Days” room rate that includes our complimentary, full buffet breakfast, plus an indoor pool, launderette, and off-site fitness center. Accommodations at our small, independent lodging property highlight the unique sense of place found in the redwoods while providing the hospitality and service of a boutique hotel.

Recent storms mean coastal rivers near Fortuna have risen to their highest levels of the winter. You’ll may catch “steelies” in the main stem Eel, South Fork Eel, Duzen, Smith, Mad, and Trinity Rivers. According to the Humboldt Steelhead Days blog post of December 20, 2018, a few adult steelhead have already been caught on the Mad River and the main stem Eel. For the Biggest Steelhead Hatchery Fish, fish the Mad River and Trinity River January 19 – February 23, 2019. Both offer easy access. Choose the Mad River, with plenty of access for bank fishing, for anglers of any skill level. The Trinity River is “a fly fishermen’s paradise” with miles of runs, riffles, and pools through the canyons along Highway 299. Visit The Rivers page of their website for more information, current river conditions, and forecasts.

Proceeds from the Humboldt Steelhead Days fishing contests support the protection, recovery, and restoration of Humboldt’s local waters and rivers where the steelhead can thrive. Visit their website for details and requirements for both contests, current conditions, and links to obtain 2019 fishing licenses. Current fishing reports and river information also are posted on Fishing the North Coast with Kenny Priest.

January is almost here, so if you’re an angler, make plans for some great steelhead fishing along Humboldt County’s coastal rivers. It’s easy to reserve your room at The Redwood “base camp” – just give us a call at 707-725-550 or go online. Don’t forget to ask for the “Steelhead Days” rate!
