Visitors have so many choices of things to do on the Redwood Coast, whether they are sightseeing, enjoying outdoor activities, or just looking for family fun. Sequoia Park complex in Eureka includes the Sequoia Park Zoo, Sequoia Park Garden, playgrounds, picnic areas, plus walking and hiking trails through the redwoods forest and meadows. Visitors can spend a day at the only zoo on California north coast, plus explore its setting beside the last stand of mature second growth redwood trees in the city. Sequoia Park and Zoo in Eureka are only 20 miles north of Fortuna and The Redwood Riverwalk Hotel.
One of the smallest accredited zoos in the country, its size makes Sequoia Park Zoo a family-friendly attraction where you can spend several hours, then spend the rest of your day enjoying other activities in the park complex, taking a hike on the Hikshari Trail, visiting the Morris Graves Museum of Art, or exploring Old Town Eureka.
The Sequoia Park Zoo hosts over 50 different species of animals, some of them rare and endangered, such as red pandas, bush dogs and Chacoan peccaries. Featured animal exhibits include:
- Red pandas, which are nearly extinct in part of their native mountain forests of Western Asia. The entertaining Red panda family living under the California redwoods are part of a worldwide breeding program for the species.
- The Nancy Hilfiker Aviary is a walk-through free-flight habitat for species of colorful local and exotic birds. Nearby is the Flamingos, Cavies & Screamers, Oh My! Exhibit.
- Watershed Heroes Neighborhood (an award winning exhibit ranked #3 in the world by ZooNation) features a watershed play fountain, river otter habitat, salmon stream, and bald eagles and northern spotted owl aviary.
- Discover the Secrets of the Forest is an indoor activity center with interactive displays highlighting native reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates such as turtles and snakes.
- The Barnyard offers hands-on experiences with farm animals including goats, sheep, alpacas, donkeys, rabbits, and fowl.
The zoo grounds include a conservation-themed gift shop and the Funky Monkey Café. 25% of the admission costs support the zoo’s conservation fund, and visitors can help decide where to spend it.
