Humboldt County is best known for its towering redwood forests, but visitors also can tour famous California architect Julia Morgan’s Redwood Grove country estate. The historic Arts & Crafts style home and landscaped grounds are tucked among the old growth redwoods along the Eel River. Our guests at the Redwood Riverwalk Hotel in Fortuna will find Redwood Grove less than an hour’s drive south in Garberville, CA.
Hotel heiress Margaret Stewart commissioned the design of Redwood Grove in 1926. Today, the main house, guest house, carriage house, and grounds have been carefully restored to their original splendor. Julia Morgan’s hallmark use of natural elements can be seen in the earth toned colors, old growth redwood, leaded glass windows, and iconic details such as birds, leaves, and rosettes. The landscaped grounds include sweeping lawns, terraces, a koi pond, English cutting garden, vegetable gardens, and fruit orchards set against the backdrop of the old growth redwoods and the river. Visit Redwood Grove’s website for a video tour.
Redwood Grove offers Estate and Garden Tours throughout the year except on Sundays. Other tours include the Fall Harvest Festival, Spring Flower and Garden Tour, and the special Mother’s Day Weekend Tea and Tour. Tea and Tour with Mum includes a House and Garden Tour, Living Wreath demonstration, and Tea with strawberries and cream, scones with jam made on the estate, and petite sweets. Gluten-free refreshments are available. Mums can shop at the Redwood Grove Boutique featuring unique gifts, wreaths, Redwood Grove jams, plants and seeds. Redwood Grove will host its 2018 Mother’s Day Tea and Tour on Saturday, May 12, 2018, with tours at 10 am, 11 am, noon, 1 pm and 2 pm. Tickets are $32 per person, and advance reservations are required. Parking is located an easy 0.4 mile walk from the home, and a golf cart shuttle is available for the Mother’s Day Tea and Tour.
A tour of Redwood Grove is the perfect complement to the Redwood Coast’s many outdoor attractions, from the Avenue of the Giants to the beaches along Humboldt Bay. If your interests include architecture, landscape architecture, historic homes, gardens, or the American Arts & Crafts movement Julia Morgan’s Redwood Grove is a must see attraction during your stay at The Redwood.
