Fortuna CA Apple Cider and Apple Harvest Festival

Closeup of large pile of round reddish apples in brown wicker basket, topped by stems of green leaves on rightIf you love apples and apple cider, be sure to visit Clendenen’s Cider Works in Fortuna this fall ~ they’re open every day of the week from August until January. There’s no better way to celebrate Humboldt Local Food Month in September than enjoying their local organic cider and home-baked apple pastries. The Cider Works also offers a selection of farm fresh produce, nuts, and honey.

Founded in 1909, Clendenen Cider Works has been in continuous operation for over a century. Some of the varieties of apple trees in their orchards date back to 1869, and still produce apples today. These older varieties, including Minkler, Smith’s Cider, and Stark , are blended with over 25 other varieties throughout the season. The taste and texture of the unpasteurized cider changes from week to week as different varieties of apples ripen and are combined to make the cider. When crushing begins in mid-August, the cider from early ripening apples such as Granvensteins may be slightly tart. As the season progresses, the cider becomes sweeter and more complex.

The Cider Works is a great stop any day during the fall, but best of all is Fortuna’s Apple Harvest Festival on October 7-8, 2017. You can enjoy your fill of apples, hard or sweet cider, and more at this community-wide celebration. The Festival is family friendly, with hayrides, live music, an old-fashioned downtown craft fair, farmers’ market, BBQ , and plenty of children’s activities. Clendenen’s Cider Works will offer about a dozen varieties of apples you can taste, plus food, live music, and tours of their 5-acre orchard with 30 varieties of apple trees. Free hay wagon rides will transport everyone between festival locations throughout the city.

Apple season is the perfect excuse for a fall getaway to California’s Redwood Coast during our wonderful September and October weather. “The best cider you’ll ever taste” is less than a mile from The Redwood Riverwalk Hotel, so don’t wait to give us a call or go online and book your stay!
