Humboldt County has more artists per capita than any other place in California, and the first two weekends in June, more than 100 of them will invite the public into their studios to share their work and sources of inspirations. The artists’ studios are located from Hydesville, just five miles southeast of Fortuna, to Trinidad in the north and Blue Lake to the east. You can visit Penny Fregeau of Nehemiah’s Art and April Sproule right here in Fortuna. Within a half-hour drive, from Rio Dell to Manila, 92 artists are participating one or both weekends, and 57 are participating in the First Friday Art Night on June 2, 2017. In addition, you can preview the Tour at Stonesthrow Boutique, 423 F Street, Eureka, from May 6 through June 11, 2017.
The Open Studio Tour showcases artists working in diverse styles and media, including painting, photography, printmaking, photography, ceramics, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, and furniture. Artists look forward to sharing their techniques and sources of inspiration, and answering visitors’ questions. In addition to the chance to visit with artists and perhaps purchase art for your home, the North Coast Open Studios sponsor a Dutch raffle during the Tour. You can choose to enter the drawings for five different prizes: a watercolor painting by Cheryl Peterson Rau; a hand-colored block print by Anna Oneglia, a glitter and acrylic painting by Augustus Clark, a succulent plant arrangement by Succulent Bliss, and a copper earring and bracelet set by Rock Chick Designs. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 5/$20, and may be purchased in advance by calling 707-498-3534.
The 19th Open Studios Tour begins on Friday, June 2, 2017, with First Friday preview night from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. More than half of the 2017 participants will be open on Friday night. Open Studios continues Saturday and Sunday June 3-4, and June 10-11, 2017, from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm each day. The North Coast Open Studios Guidebook is published in the North Coast Journal in late May. You can find copies of the full-color 40-page publication in galleries and other central locations throughout Humboldt County all year. For additional information or questions, visit their Facebook page or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Seldom do you have the opportunity to visit so many artists on an open studio tour, so don’t wait to give us a call or book your room online at The Redwood Riverwalk Hotel in Fortuna.
